A Survivor’s Guide To “make do” In Catholic Ireland: Intrigued By “The Promise of Silence”

What many LGBT rights advocates fail to grasp fully, is how traumatic coming out as bisexual or homosexual can be for a person. I myself have come across several of them, who mean well, but have no first-hand experience of dealing with the mind numbing, soul crushing experiences of going through your early years as a bisexual or homosexual person. Same goes for anyone who is transgender as well.

However I stand corrected after coming across the “The Promise Of Silence” recently, written by author ‘Marshal’ (he has no other names). A tale which intimately explores the adversities of a homosexual person in modern, but hetero-normative, Catholic Ireland.

I was intrigued just by reading the synopsis (I am a self-confessed bookworm) available freely on the internet. I was hooked immediately. I plan to buy the book later on.

Now I don’t do book previews often. But I felt like the need to let others know about this one. It is after all very hard to find reliable sources on LGBT history. It is also very hard to find a book (which this one promises to be), which takes a much closer look at the formative years of a homosexual person, residing in the Western hemisphere of the world, considered by many as more tolerant and open than other regions.

“The Promise Of Silence” incidentally is also a crowd funded publication. This according to the author himself who believes no publisher in Ireland will take him on, because his “anti-catholic gay-related book did not conform to the target market of traditional Irish publishers” (source: https://lgbt.ie/the-promise-of-silence-a-survival-story-of-growing-up-gay-in-catholic-ireland/)

“The Promise Of Silence” book is available to buy on ‘amazon.co.uk’ right now, and I am sure that this book is set to take its readers aback. Because a lot of us would flip through its pages feeling that the novelty of an LGBT drama book has worn off. If the excerpt was anything to go by prepare to be shocked.
