lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender history month (LGBT history month) is celebrated each year in February. It is an opportunity for all of us to learn more about the histories of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in the UK.
A brief history of LGBT+Community’s right in the United Kingdon:
before 1967: Homosexuality was illegal (lesbianism wasn’t a crime as Queen Victoria allegedly refused to believe it existed).1967: Sexual Offences Act partially de-criminalizes male homosexuality making a age of consent 21.In 1994: Age of consent lowered for gay men from 21 in 18. In2001: Age of consent lowered for gay men to 16 – equalizing it with that for heterosexuals. In2002: Equal rights are granted to lesbian and gay couples applying for adoption. In 2004: Civil Partnership Act gives same-sex couples rights and responsibilities identical to civil marriage. In 2005: Elton John was one of the first to enter into a civil partnership with his partner David Furnish on 21 December 2005. In 2004: Sexual Offence Act 2004 sweeps away the Victorian Laws that were discriminatory towards gay men. Recognition of homophobic assault as a ‘hate crime. In 2005: LGBT History Month adopted in the UK throughout February. In 2010: Equality Act in the UK bans an unfair treatment of people for their ‘protected characteristics’, amongst which are sexual orientation and gender reassignment. In 2013: Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013 passed. In 2014: Same-sex marriage became legal in England and Wales.
